Facebook Flaunts Open Servers
Facebook CEO Zuckerberg’s recent announcement that his open servers saved one billion dollars last year highlights the success of the social media mogul’s three-year partnership with the Open Compute Project.
“In just the last year we’ve saved the equivalent amount of energy of 40,000 homes in a year, and saved the amount of emissions equivalent to taking 50,000 cars off the road for a year,” Zuckerberg announced at the fifth annual OCP Forum in San Jose. Harnessing the open-source philosophy usually relegated to software in order to reinvent computing hardware in a leaner, greener image, the project promises to share intellectual property to speed technological advancement. The resulting low-energy servers are expected to compete head-to-head with similar Intel technology.
