Summer, IT’s Busiest Season
Ipswitch, a software company, recently released a study in which they unveiled the truth about the IT industry’s “summer vacation” – basically, it doesn’t exist.
While many industries tend to hit a slow period during the summer due to vacations, IT service providers and managers actually have an increased workload during these months. The increase is due primarily to an influx of employees working remotely who need access to software and files, or are having issues with their own devices.
Of the IT professionals surveyed, 42% reported that laptop malfunctions were their most frequently dealt with issues, while 33% cited remote connectivity issues. With this in mind, it can also be assumed that the winter months – which are expected to be particularly harsh this year – would see an influx of similar issues, with many individuals taking time off to visit family and friends over the holidays, or being unable to make it into work due to inclement weather (especially here in New England).
The results of this study underscore the importance of companies having solid mobility and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies in place. For companies who have taken the time to implement and manage these policies, vacations and weather emergencies won’t pose as much of a problem as they do for companies that handle such issues individually, as they occur. A solid BYOD policy will allow employees to utilize their personal equipment for business functions, while providing them with access to the files and software they need via remote connections.
