It\u2019s also the time when academic calendars flip over to a new year, signaling a \u201cfresh start\u201d for establishing goals for your organization.<\/p>\n<p>One of those goals \u2013 and initiatives \u2013 should be to ensure your <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Information technology management\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Information_technology_management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">IT infrastructure<\/a>\u00a0is \u201cSummer Ready\u201d to handle the remote work, as well as the heat. Sure, that\u2019s a term that\u2019s usually thrown around when people are discussing beach plans, but IT needs just as much attention \u2013 maybe even more \u2013 to ensure it\u2019s running properly and that severe summer weather doesn\u2019t wreak havoc on your plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Environmental Control:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the country will be facing hot and humid weather \u2013 and it is harshest for electronics. In fact, computers typically do not perform well <em>at all<\/em>\u00a0in humid conditions, and while it may be fine for\u00a0a day or two, long-standing humidity can cause significant damage to your equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, electronics \u2013 like cars \u2013 can overheat and shut down when conditions get too hot, this is especially true of servers, which are often kept in very small closed-off spaces. For optimal performance, ensure your equipment is stored in a cool, temperature controlled, dry environment. \u00a0Also check that the\u00a0server fans are clear \u2013 both of dust and of obstructions (such as walls) that may inhibit their effectiveness for cooling the machine down. You should also consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Checking your air conditioning to ensure they\u2019re working properly both during business hours, as well as at night and during weekends<\/li>\n<li>Purchase a dehumidifier (if needed) to keep the server room dry<\/li>\n<li>Regularly check air filters on your air conditioner and the dehumidifier to maintain dust-free zones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Disaster Recovery &amp; Business Continuity:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This time of year can also deliver\u00a0<a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Severe weather\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Severe_weather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">severe weather<\/a> conditions across the country. In areas which experience extreme drought, consider how quickly it can lead to wildfires that spread and damage buildings. In others, there are tornados, severe thunderstorms, floods, or hurricanes.<\/p>\n<p>Wherever you\u2019re business is headquartered, chances are you\u2019re likely to experience some form of severe weather during the spring and summer; this is why it is so important to take a look at your\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1AYMMYU\">Disaster Recovery<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1L8wlLE\">Business Continuity<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0plans. Especially if this is the only time of year your company is at risk of losing power or suffering damage.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to have a <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Backup battery\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Backup_battery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">backup battery<\/a> system for your equipment \u2013 including the age and functionality of the system, as well as running a test. A <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Power outage\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_outage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"wikipedia noopener noreferrer\">power outage<\/a> is most likely to occur during severe storms that can cause your power to flicker or go out temporarily.
