{"id":1354,"date":"2016-08-04T10:45:34","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T14:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tsisupport.com\/?p=1354"},"modified":"2021-10-29T00:51:28","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T04:51:28","slug":"standingvssitting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tsisupport.com\/tsistaging\/?p=1354","title":{"rendered":"Workplace Health Tips: Standing vs. Sitting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The health effects related to sitting at your desk all day is widely publicized, from an increase in the risk of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/standing-sitting-risk-of-obesity_us_563a5bffe4b0307f2cabac9d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">obesity<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/standing-up-for-better-heart-health-201508058167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heart disease<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2014\/02\/19\/279460759\/sit-more-and-youre-more-likely-to-be-disabled-after-age-60\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">disability<\/a>, and\/or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/too-much-sitting-linked-to-an-early-death-201401297004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shorter life expectancy<\/a>.\u00a0 Sitting has become the new smoking.\u00a0 So the obvious answer to living a healthy long life is simple, right?\u00a0 Just stand up; however, science seems to debunk the growing and popular trend of standing desks, or even the latest treadmill workstations.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Studies:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>According to a publication by researchers in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cochrane.org\/CD010912\/OCCHEALTH_workplace-interventions-reducing-sitting-time-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews<\/a>, of the more than twenty studies conducted, there were conflicting results.\u00a0 The contradictions in each finding often were a result of small sample sizes or poorly designed experiments where most were not randomized controlled trials, or the subjects were not studied for a significant amount of time to evaluate the effects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Results: \u00a0<\/strong><\/span>At best, the results were inconclusive with too many uncontrolled elements to determine definitive benefits to standing over sitting at a desk.\u00a0 In fact, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1740939\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">study published in 2005<\/a> revealed prolonged standing at work was associated with hospitalization and the development of varicose veins (VV).\u00a0 These risks can be easily mitigated when you compare the plethora of risks associated to sitting at your desk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Conclusion:<\/span> \u00a0<\/strong>These findings do not discredit the idea of working in a standing position, it merely translates to being an unknown.\u00a0 What can be determined when evaluating these studies is that more research is required to demystify a topic that effects millions in professional environments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Until then, the general thought is to have a blended approach.\u00a0 Stand and sit in moderation, as well as taking breaks throughout the day to walk around the office.\u00a0 The focus should be changing daily work behavior, rather than the elements.\u00a0 Elect to park a bit further from the door, print a document across the office rather than at your desk, or stop by a peer\u2019s cubicle rather than emailing.
