Why is cybersecurity important?

Cybersecurity is important because it helps protect sensitive data from unauthorized exposure, theft, or damage. Target data can include personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), personal information, intellectual property, and governmental and industry information systems. From an operational perspective, effective cybersecurity can help reduce the impact of disruption to critical systems. Whatever the cause, the impact can be costly— loss of revenue, damage to an organization’s reputation, and loss of employment for example. Without effective cybersecurity practices, even critical infrastructure systems and medical systems used to preserve life can stop working or become unstable.
